Brain Games for Seniors: 7 Free Puzzles to Try
A short daily puzzle keeps the mind busy without apps or subscriptions. It asks you to hold a few things in mind, spot patterns and reason step by step. Here are seven free brain games you can play in your web browser. Each has big print, no timer and no sign-up.
1. Sudoku
The number grid asks for reasoning, not arithmetic. Fill every row, column and box with 1 to 9. My large-print Sudoku has an always-on Hint and unlimited Undo, and there is a fresh Daily Sudoku every morning if you like a routine.
2. Mini Crossword
A full newspaper crossword can eat an afternoon; a mini crossword is five squares by five, with friendly everyday clues. Every letter you place helps confirm the words crossing it.
3. Nonogram
Also called Picross or paint-by-numbers: the numbers beside each row and column tell you which squares to fill, and a little picture appears as you go. My nonograms come in three sizes, and every puzzle can be solved by logic alone, with no guessing.
4. Cat Sudoku
Place one cat in every row, column and colour, with no two cats touching. Cat Sudoku is a cat version of the queens puzzle, and each board has exactly one answer you can reason your way to. There is a daily board too.
5. Memory Match
Flip two cards, find the pairs. Memory Match exercises short-term recall. Start with the small board and work up.
6. Minesweeper
Every number tells you how many mines touch that square; from those clues alone you can clear the whole board. Minesweeper rewards slow, careful thinking, and nothing makes you rush a click.
7. Trivia
Recalling the films, songs and facts of a lifetime is real mental exercise. My trivia quiz covers classic movies, golden oldies, gardens and cooking, and it tells you the right answer when you miss.
What makes a brain game easy on you
Any puzzle can be good exercise; the difference is how it treats you. Every game above has big, clear print with a one-tap text-size control, no countdown, and hints whenever you want them. None needs a download or a sign-up, and nothing pops up over the board.
