How the quiz works
Pick a topic and you get a round of ten multiple-choice questions, shown one at a time in big, clear type. Each question has four large answer buttons labelled A to D. Tap the one you pick. You find out straight away whether you were right, in words as well as colour, and every answer comes with an extra fact. Then press Next question and carry on at your own pace.
There is no timer, lives or leaderboard. A wrong answer costs you nothing: the right one is shown and the round carries on. At the end you see your score and can play the same topic again with a fresh mix of questions.
The five topics
The questions are meant to be remembered, not to trip you up:
- Classic Movies: the films of Hollywood's golden decades, from Casablanca to E.T.
- Golden Oldies Music: Elvis, the Beatles, Sinatra, Motown and the songs everyone knows.
- General Knowledge: everyday facts, famous places and moments people remember well.
- Nature & Gardening: birds, bees, blooms and gardening know-how.
- Food & Cooking: home cooking, classic dishes and kitchen know-how.
Playing a little each day
A round takes a few minutes. Because every round draws ten fresh questions at random and shuffles the answers, you can play it every day without getting the same quiz.
More question-and-answer puzzles are on the brain puzzles and word games pages.
Frequently asked questions
- How does the trivia quiz work?
- Pick a topic, and you get a round of ten multiple-choice questions, one at a time. Tap one of the four big answer buttons; you are told straight away whether you were right, along with an extra fact. At the end you see your score and can play again with a fresh set of questions.
- What topics can I choose from?
- Five topics: Classic Movies, Golden Oldies Music, General Knowledge, Nature & Gardening, and Food & Cooking. The questions lean toward the films, songs and everyday know-how of the 1940s through the 1980s.
- Is there a timer or a way to lose?
- No. There is no clock, lives or leaderboard. Take all the time you like on every question. A wrong answer shows you the right one with an interesting fact.
- Do the questions repeat?
- Each round draws ten different questions at random from a larger bank, and the answer choices are shuffled every time, so no two rounds are quite the same.
- Is it really free?
- Yes. It is free, and you do not need to sign up or give an email. There are no pop-ups and nothing that sits over the quiz. To keep the site free I may show a few small, clearly-marked ads off to the side.
